What it is
Philly Community Wireless (PCW) is a community-controlled Wi-Fi network in North Philadelphia. Its homepage names Norris Square, Fairhill and Kensington, covering zip codes 19122, 19133 and 19134. Access points on rooftops and poles relay Wi-Fi across those neighbourhoods.
The project appears active. Its homepage was advertising a job opening when we read it. A Princeton Center for Digital Humanities blog post dated 4 June 2026 (seen in search results, not fetched) mentions PCW in a publication about cooperative broadband and community-supported infrastructure.
What we could not confirm
- Node count. Not published. The network map page embeds a Mapbox map at map.phillycommunitywireless.org, and we found no open data feed behind it. There is no live counter for PCW.
- Firmware and routing. The pages we read do not say what software the access points run.
- Cost. Described as free public Wi-Fi in the area. We found no fee schedule.
- Legal form. Not confirmed beyond "community-controlled".
- Speeds. Not published.
An older press snippet cites a block count and monthly user figure for the network. We could not fetch it or date it, so we do not repeat the numbers.
How to join
- Check the network map to see whether your block is covered.
- Use the contact details on the homepage, including the [email protected] address given there, to ask about access or volunteering.
- Follow the project on Bluesky or Mastodon for announcements; both links are on the homepage.
What it realistically gives you
Free Wi-Fi access to the internet, within a limited footprint in North Philadelphia. It is not a long-range network and it does not extend beyond the neighbourhoods above. Treat it as local public Wi-Fi run by the community, not as a way to build your own mesh.
Caveats
- It uses licence-free Wi-Fi bands, so no amateur licence applies.
- Our research found no UK Wi-Fi community mesh groups, so UK readers cannot join this one and should use it as an example of a neighbourhood-scale model.
- The project's own materials are the only reliable source for coverage. Search snippets and press pieces can be years old.
