Broadband-capable community networks
Detroit Community Technology Project / Equitable Internet Initiative
Neighbourhood-governed wireless internet in Detroit, built and maintained by trained local residents
Carries internet traffic unverified
detroitcommunitytech.org loads and lists the Equitable Internet Initiative as an active programme, but its pages show no dates and we confirmed no 2026 activity. The latest published figures are from 2017 and 2018.

| Governance | DCTP is a project of Allied Media Projects. The Equitable Internet Initiative was announced in September 2016 (Allied Media, 9 September 2016); DCTP has trained Digital Stewards since 2012, and the EII programme page describes a 20-week training in 2017. Networks are governed by the neighbourhoods they serve. |

How it works
The Detroit Community Technology Project (DCTP) is a project of Allied Media Projects. Its Equitable Internet Initiative (EII) was announced in September 2016 (Allied Media's announcement is dated 9 September 2016). DCTP has trained community technology leaders as Digital Stewards since 2012. Under the EII, DCTP redistributes wholesale gigabit connections to neighbourhoods and trains Digital Stewards to deploy and manage wireless networks powered by them.
The service areas are Southwest, Islandview and the North End in Detroit, with Highland Park added in 2019. We could not confirm the network topology or routing stack.
How to join
It is neighbourhood-based, not an open join-the-map network. The EII page gives [email protected] as the contact.
What it realistically gives you
By design it shares a funded uplink, so it carries ordinary internet traffic for connected homes. Current speeds and coverage are not published.
The programme page states that more than 150 homes were connected across three neighbourhoods by 2018, and that 45 Digital Stewards were trained in 2017 in a 20-week programme. Those are 2017 and 2018 figures, so this site shows no current count.
Caveats
- Status is unverified. The site loads and lists EII as an active programme, and has posts about seeking an executive director and a staff farewell, but its pages show no dates. We confirmed no 2026 activity.
- DCTP's founding year was not found (the 2016 announcement says it has trained Digital Stewards since 2012).
- It operates in Detroit only. Our research found no UK Wi-Fi community mesh groups.
