Community Wi-Fi mesh vs Starlink
Community Wi-Fi mesh versus Starlink
Two ways to reduce dependence on a conventional ISP, and the different dependencies each one leaves you with.
Updated 29 Oct 2026
At a glance
| Community Wi-Fi mesh | Starlink | |
|---|---|---|
| What it provides | Real internet access via upstream and exchange links (NYC Mesh, Guifi.net; Freifunk via VPN gateways) | Satellite broadband through user terminals and gateway ground stations connected to the terrestrial internet |
| Operator | Volunteers or a foundation: NYC Mesh is a 501(c)(3); Fundació Guifi.net; Freifunk is decentralised local groups | A SpaceX subsidiary |
| Scale | NYC Mesh: 1,222 active node records of 1,416 (API, 29 Oct 2026); Guifi.net: more than 37,000 active nodes as of December 2021; Freifunk: about 41,000 self-reported nodes, mixed age | About 11,150 satellites in orbit as of October 2026, per Wikipedia |
| Cost to user | NYC Mesh lists a $290 install cost, due on completion, with a subsidised $160 option and a $40/month instalment option (NYC Mesh payment page, 29 Oct 2026); Freifunk and Guifi.net users generally supply their own hardware | UK price not confirmed |
| Dependence | Needs at least one upstream ISP or exchange for internet; local traffic can work without it | Depends on the constellation, gateways and the terms of one company |
| Availability | Only where a community exists; we found none in the UK | Broadband in approximately 160 countries and territories per Wikipedia; UK capacity by postcode not confirmed |
| Speed and latency | Depends on the build; NYC Mesh advertises 10+ gigabit fibre to buildings, rooftop speeds unpublished | Wikipedia says typical latency is lower than traditional geostationary satellite internet; no current UK speeds read |
| Privacy | NYC Mesh states it does not monitor, collect, store or block user data | Provider-controlled; terms not read |
| Direct to phone | Not applicable | Starlink Mobile offers a 4G connection from a limited range of standard phones via partner operators (UK partner: Virgin Media O2); about 650 of roughly 9,800 satellites supported it as of February 2026 |
Node counts are not like-for-like (installs, self-reported nodes, registered nodes). Our definitions are in find a local mesh.
Key differences
Distributed ownership versus a single vendor
Community meshes distribute ownership and keep local traffic local. NYC Mesh runs under a Network Commons License; Guifi.net under a Wireless Commons License. Starlink does not distribute anything: it relocates the point of failure to orbit and one company. The wider argument is in the ISP as a single point of failure.
Neither removes the upstream
A community mesh that gives internet access still buys transit or peers at an exchange. Guifi.net has been a registered operator since April 2009 and peers via the CATNIX exchange; NYC Mesh uses OSPF internally and BGP to the wider internet; Freifunk typically tunnels over VPN to gateways. When the upstream fails, internet access fails, though local traffic can continue. See resilience in practice for the Red Hook case, where a mesh stayed up where its building had power but relied on donated bandwidth and a FEMA satellite link offered for 30 days.
Availability
This is the practical dividing line. A community mesh can only be joined where one exists. Starlink is sold across many countries, but we could not read UK availability or capacity. We assessed no Starlink outage history.
In the UK
We found no UK community Wi-Fi mesh comparable to NYC Mesh or Guifi.net; see find a local mesh and join a community Wi-Fi mesh. Wikipedia says Starlink Mobile is offered in the UK via Virgin Media O2; we did not research its coverage, price or terms. We did not read any ISP terms, so we cannot say whether sharing a mesh uplink breaches an ISP's conditions. Check yours.
Community Wi-Fi meshes use licence-free Wi-Fi bands, so no amateur licence is involved.
Which should you choose?
- A community network exists near you and you want local ownership: join it. See join a community Wi-Fi mesh.
- No wired or community option exists and you accept single-vendor dependence: Starlink; get current UK terms from its site.
- You only need text when networks fail: a LoRa mesh. See which mesh is right for you.
- Not sure: which mesh tool.

FAQ
Is a community mesh cheaper than Starlink?
We cannot compare, because we have no confirmed Starlink UK price. For a community mesh, NYC Mesh suggests about $290 for a professional install. Freifunk and Guifi.net users generally buy their own hardware.
Can I join a community Wi-Fi mesh in the UK?
We found none in our research. The networks in our directory operate in other countries.
Does Starlink work if the local internet goes down?
We did not assess this. Starlink depends on its own satellites and gateways, which connect to the terrestrial internet.
Can a LoRa mesh replace either?
No. LoRa meshes carry short messages, not web traffic. See LoRa vs Wi-Fi mesh.
